Swim anyone?

Hooray!

The day that we have all been waiting for has arrived. Last October, the Balgo pool sprung a leak and was out of action during some of the hottest parts of the year. But now, due to the amazing and commendable efforts of the fabulous Jim and Anthony, swimming resumed at Luurnpa Catholic School today! Yay :) Needless to say, everyone was pretty pumped about the afternoon swimming time, where Henry and myself watched over four sets of different classes; with his Bronze Medallion and my Senior First Aid Certificate, every child is safe! After not being used for so long, we had to clear the pool of various creepy crawlies including centipedes, spiders and my personal favourite, the resilient water beetle that Henry fished out five times before throwing over the fence. When this was done, the pool was ready to have over eighty kids in over the space of the afternoon. Being at a school for a week behind the scenes has taught us the value of reverse psychology and we enticed every kid to show us how deep they could dive by picking up the leaves of the bottom of the pool. It was pretty clean afterwards thanks to our amazing but somewhat questionable thinking.

The day began with rain and as I look out the window, it looks like another storm is brewing. I thought being in the desert would mean hot and dry weather but it is completely the opposite. The mercury has not yet gone over 34°C and it is humid and muggy, although unlike Perth it is very bearable. As one of the teachers pointed out the other day, 'it is the wet season!' I really enjoy this weather; so unpredictable and exciting. The lightning storms are amazing beyond belief and the thunder is constant, although never as frightening as back home. I really could get used to just having two set seasons in a year; the wet and dry ones!
